I thought I’d be getting some wonderful back-lot adventure and instead it’s just a bunch of nice pictures and garden tips. Why is there DIY project instructions for building a garden arbor? I can get that from the magazine rack at Home Depot. Why is there a topic on the temperature zones of the United States? I bought this book because I was interested in Disney, not my backyard. There are a few good tidbits of what goes on behind the scenes but nowhere near what I was hoping for.

I have thoroughly the book Secrets of Disney’s Glorious Gardens. The pictures are gorgeous and the text is very informative. It is a great book.

But, I wanted to know more about specifics that take place in the Disney’s horticultural arena. Also, why talk about the oldest specimen on property (a yucca in the Mexico pavilion over 250 years old) and then not have a photograph. I am a serious gardener and an avid Disney fan. As an annual passholder I travel down to Walt Disney World 4-6 times a year. As much for their gardens as anything else. I was really hoping for more in depth knowledge of horticulture at Disney. A lot of information in the book is very basic. If you love Disney and love plants then I would still recommend this book for your collection. Just be prepared that you are not going to receive the "inside look" that I anticipated.

As a Disney-holic I can never get enough information on DisneyWorld. This book is beautifully laid out with awesome pictures and great information, even for someone like me who "kills" silk! Great book!

This is quite a nice book to have, but it’s not a must-have unless you are fond on gardening and/or would love to have or have a garden. Pics are very nice, but if you’re looking for new pictures with unusual points of view, you may find yourself a little disappointed.

I got this book for my mom for mother’s day and ended up reading all the way through it before I gave it to her. It has great ideas for various containers and gives good details for each different herb. Well rounded, detailed, and focused.

This seems to be a really good book on growing Herbs for Brown thumbs like me. I have not actually used any of the advice/tips yet but all sound very easy and understandable. I will wait a little longer to start again with growing Herbs again. (Weather)

This is such a nice book and nicely put together. Whether I read or just browse through it, it just makes me feel good.

If you’re the type of person that likes to do things without a lot of theory, this is a great book.

I’m a novice gardener and the introduction gardening instructions just didn’t have enough information for me. I decided to purchase Gardening For Dummies and various other books to satisfy my need for detailed information before setting some serious time, money, and effort into a balcony garden for my apartment.

This book has great ideas and did a good job of introducing me to different herbs and plants to grow to be used in cooking. But if you want to get more "hardcore" with gardening I recommend getting other texts as well.

First let me admit I am biased, since this gem is written by someone I know and admire, here in Northern California. But it nonetheless a gem of a book with superb photographs as well as excellent advise on Do’s and Don’t of raising a variety of herbs. I also like the book because it shows that one can successfully raise year round fresh herbs, and do so on an acre or on a small patio. And the author also covers edible flowers another favorite of my families.

8 Tips Vegetable Gardening

Wednesday, September 03rd, 2008 | Author: Home and Garden

1. While planning your vegetable garden, consider what and how much you will plant. In selecting a site or plot, consider the exposure to sunlight. It is important to consider also the different sunlight requirement for different vegetables. Leafy vegetables can be grown n partial shades but vegetables with fruits must be grown in direct sunlight.

2. Proper soil preparation provides the basis for good seed germination of garden crops. The ideal vegetable garden soil is deep, well-drained, moisture retentive and has high organic matter content. Soil should not be worked or plowed while it is very wet. Different types of vegetables would require varying degrees of soil acidity and this is measured by pH and must be adjusted accordingly.

2. In buying vegetable seeds, be mindful of the germination qualities, tendencies towards insects , vigour of plants etc. This provides useful benchmarks as you can determine whether the varieties are suitable or not for your gardening style or your area, or whether a particular seed company is not meeting your needs. You will be better prepared for the next planting season.

3. In sowing your seeds , you may want to plant extra seeds in each row in case of failed germination and thinning. It is important to keep soil moist until the seedlings are up. Thin them only after the seedlings have emerged and developed their second or third set of true leaves. The best time to thin is when the seedlings are still small as this will not disturb the roots of the plants.

4. The amount of fertilizer to use depends on the natural fertility of the soil, the type of fertilizer, the crop and the amount of organic matter present. The best way to determine fertilizer needs is to have the soil tested.

5. To manage pest control in your garden, start with ensuring that plants are healthy and growing well. Use plenty of compost, practise crop rotation and ensure adequate drainage. Remove vegetable refuse from the garden. Increase bio-diversity by planting only small quantities of the same vegetable in any one place. Encourage natural controls such as birds, toads and parasitic insects.

6. To ensure success in growing vegetables is to plant or transplant each crop at the best times for each locality. Vegetable crops may be grouped roughly and sown according to their hardiness and temperature requirements.

7. Weed control is essential in successful vegetable gardening as weeds can rob cultivated plants of water, nutrients and light. It is important that the soil is hoed or cultivated after each rain or irrigation to kill the weeds that have sprouted.

8. Regular watering is essential to maintain a healthy garden. Gardens in most areas would require a moisture supply equivalent to about an inch of rain a week during the growing season. An inch of rain is about 28,000 gallons on an acre or 900 gallons on a 30 x 50 feet garden.
